To help us expand our role as NCC, we will be changing the
status reporting facility of the IMP. The change will take place
within the next month and should be transparent to the hosts.

The text status reports will be removed. They have already
been completely superseded by a binary version sent directly to
the NCC and are now just excess baggage.

The status reports will remain with the statistics program
on fake host 3, but will no longer be affected by any of the
PARAMETER CHANGE parameters. This will prevent the Hosts from
inadvertently interfering with the operation of the NCC.

PROBLEMThe IMP's text status reports had become redundant after a binary report was sent directly to the Network Control Center.
MECHANISMBBN planned to remove the text reports and prevent host PARAMETER CHANGE settings from affecting reports in the statistics program on fake host 3.
REPORTING CHANGEThe change was intended to be transparent to hosts and protect NCC reporting from accidental host interference.

§1Removing Text Reports

BBN planned to change the IMP status reporting facility within the next month. Text status reports would be removed because a binary version had already superseded them and was sent directly to the Network Control Center.

The text reports were no longer needed because the NCC already received a binary version. BBN planned to remove the redundant reports.

§2Protecting NCC Statistics

Status reports would remain with the statistics program on fake host 3. However, hosts would no longer be able to affect those reports through PARAMETER CHANGE settings.

The RFC says this change would prevent hosts from inadvertently interfering with NCC operations. It also says the change should be transparent to hosts.

The statistics program would remain, but host parameter changes would no longer affect its reports. BBN expected hosts not to notice the change.

§3Timing

The notice says the change would take place within the next month. It does not provide further implementation details.

BBN expected to make the change within the next month.
