Information Management System
-----------------------------
We intend to build an Information Management and Statistical System
for the ILLIAC IV. It is intended to support various areas of research
whose problems are ILLIAC IV suited and whose data bases are large.
This System will include a user language and necessary manipulatory
routines for the ILLIAC IV. It will use the datacomputer for Archival
storage and provide the interface to the datacomputer for queries not
ILLIAC suited.
If you have problems involving large amounts of data and wish to
learn more about our proposed system or contribute to its development,

§1A System for Large Research Data
The University of Illinois Center for Advanced Computation intended to build an Information Management and Statistical System for the ILLIAC IV. It was aimed at research problems suited to that computer and involving large databases. The notice describes an intention to build the system, rather than a completed design.
The project would give researchers tools to work with large collections of data on the ILLIAC IV. It was still a plan when this notice was written.
§2Language, Routines and Archival Storage
The planned system would include a user language and routines for manipulating data on the ILLIAC IV. It would also use the datacomputer for archival storage and provide an interface to that system for queries that were not suited to the ILLIAC IV.
The notice does not specify the language, the routines or the detailed division of work between the two computers.
The ILLIAC IV would run the system's data tools. The datacomputer would keep stored data and handle some queries that did not fit the ILLIAC IV.
§3Invitation to Researchers
The system was intended for research involving substantial data and problems suited to the ILLIAC IV. Dorothy Hopkin invited people with such problems to contact the University of Illinois Center for Advanced Computation to learn about the proposal or take part in its development.
Researchers with large data problems were invited to ask about the planned system and help shape its development.
