                          MIT-DMS on Vacation

TO: Network Liaisons and Station Agents

The PDP-10 at Project MAC, affectionately known as the Dynamic
Modeling System, will, during the holiday season, take a short
vacation from all activities including networking. The best estimate
I have, at present, is that we expect that on or about December 26,
1972, the system will cease operation for a period of at least 10
days and possibly as long as three weeks. During this period, we
will be installing a paging system. I wish to advise people of this
hiatus in system operation and also to advise them that during the
first few weeks the paging system is in operation, the Dynamic
Modeling system may not be as available as it has been in the past.

PROBLEMMIT's Dynamic Modeling System was scheduled to stop operating while a paging system was installed.
MECHANISMThe notice estimates a shutdown beginning around December 26, 1972, lasting at least 10 days and possibly as long as three weeks.
MAINTENANCE NOTICENetwork liaisons were warned that the system might also be less available during the first weeks after the installation.

§1Planned System Shutdown

The PDP-10 at Project MAC, called the Dynamic Modeling System, was expected to stop operating on or about December 26, 1972. The notice estimates that it would be unavailable for at least 10 days and possibly as long as three weeks, including for network use.

The Dynamic Modeling System was expected to go offline around December 26. The notice gives a minimum and possible maximum length for the shutdown.

§2Installing a Paging System

The shutdown would allow the team to install a paging system. The notice does not describe the equipment or give technical details about the installation.

The system would be offline so staff could install a paging system. The notice does not explain how that system would work.

§3Availability After the Shutdown

The notice warns that during the first few weeks of paging-system operation, the Dynamic Modeling System might not be as available as it had been before. It informs network liaisons and station agents of both the shutdown and the possible reduced availability afterward.

Even after the system returned, users were warned that it might be less available for a few weeks.
