Announcement of a Mail Facility at UCSB

There now exists a server program at UCSB, resident under socket 3,
which supports that subset of the File Transfer Protocol necessary
for mail delivery. Only the MAIL and BYE commands are implemented at
   this time.

Mail may be sent to an individual at UCSB by specifying his local
user name in the MAIL command. The following is a list of those
individuals currently defined as valid recipients of Network mail,
each with their respective user name: Ed Faeh (FAEH), Jim Guyton
(GUYTON), Mark Krilanovich (KRILANOV), Curtis Mosso (MOSSO), John
Pickens (PICKENS), and Ron Stoughton (STOUGHTN). In addition, any
general comments or complaints about UCSB services may be sent to
   user name GRIPE.

PROBLEMPeople on the network needed a way to send mail to users at UCSB.
MECHANISMA UCSB server on socket 3 implemented the MAIL and BYE commands, the subset of FTP the announcement says was needed for mail delivery.
WHAT IT ENABLEDThe announcement lists six individual recipient names and the general address GRIPE.

§1The UCSB Mail Facility

UCSB announced a server program resident under socket 3. It supported the subset of the File Transfer Protocol needed for mail delivery, with only the MAIL and BYE commands implemented at the time of the announcement.

A UCSB server accepted network mail through a limited set of FTP commands. At the time, it supported MAIL for mail delivery and BYE to end the exchange.

§2Mail Recipients

A sender addressed mail to an individual by giving that person's local UCSB user name in the MAIL command. The announcement names FAEH, GUYTON, KRILANOV, MOSSO, PICKENS and STOUGHTN as valid recipients. It also lists GRIPE for general comments or complaints about UCSB services.

Senders used a local user name to address one of the listed UCSB recipients. They could send general comments or complaints to GRIPE.

§3Scope of the Announcement

This RFC announces the existence and limited command set of the UCSB mail server. It does not describe a general mail protocol or provide details beyond the supported commands and recipient names.

The note announces one site's mail service and who could receive messages there. It does not define a general network mail system.
