PROBLEMReaders and operators needed visual references for the ARPANET's geographic and logical layout.
MECHANISMRFC 616 distributes two maps labeled as the geographic and logical ARPANET maps for January 1974.
THE DOCUMENTThe RFC is a map document; the text extraction preserves the labels but not the full map illustrations.

§1Two ARPANET Maps

The RFC is titled “Latest Network Maps” and includes a geographic map and a logical map of the ARPANET. Both map headings identify January 1974 as the map date.

The document contains two kinds of ARPANET map, both dated January 1974. One is geographic and the other is logical.

§2Geographic and Logical Views

The geographic map is labeled as a map of the ARPA Network. The second is labeled as the logical map. The RFC presents them as illustrations rather than describing their contents in prose.

The two illustrations present different views of the ARPANET. The text does not explain individual map details.

§3A Dated Map Record

The RFC records a pair of network maps with January 1974 headings. The extracted text includes some place and site labels, but the maps themselves carry the visual information.

This RFC preserves a dated map snapshot of the network. Its text alone does not show the complete maps.
