RFC # 621 SRI-ARC
NIC # 21994 March 6, 1974
NIC USER DIRECTORIES AT SRI-ARC
On Friday evening 8-Mar-74, we will delete all those directories at
SRI-ARC that belonged to NIC users who were transferred to OFFICE-1.
Simultaneous1y, there is to be a change at each Network Host such that
the Hostname "NIC" will refer to OFFICE-1 (Host 53 octal), not to SRI-
ARC. (See RFC# 620, NIC# 21993)
The effect of these changes is that Network mail sent to NIC users in
the form
"nicusername@NIC"
will be delivered to OFFICE-1, as it should.
But if such mail is sent to
"nicusername@SRI-ARC"
it will not be accepted at SRI-ARC, because the NIC user's username will
be no longer be known there.
PLEASE NOTE THAT IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO READ ANY NETWORK MAIL THAT
WAS DELIVERED TO YOU AT SRI-ARC PRIOR TO FRIDAY EVENING 8-MARCH. THIS
MAIL WILL BE DELETED AT THAT TIME.

§1Deleting the Old Directories
Michael Kudlick announces that directories at SRI-ARC belonging to NIC users transferred to OFFICE-1 would be deleted Friday evening, March 8, 1974. The notice links this change to the host-table update described in RFC 620.
The NIC users had moved, and their old directories were scheduled for deletion. This notice gives them time to prepare.
§2Where Mail Would Be Delivered
At the same time, the hostname NIC would refer to OFFICE-1 rather than SRI-ARC. Mail addressed as a NIC user at NIC would therefore be delivered to OFFICE-1.
Mail addressed to the same user at SRI-ARC would no longer be accepted there because the user's name would no longer be known at that host.
After the host-name change, mail sent to NIC would go to OFFICE-1. Mail sent to the user's old SRI-ARC address would not be accepted.
§3Users Must Read Their Mail
The notice says users were responsible for reading any Network mail delivered to them at SRI-ARC before Friday evening, March 8. That mail would be deleted at that time.
Users needed to check their old mail before the deadline. The RFC says that mail would be deleted rather than moved automatically.
