Status of RFC Numbers and a
                  Note on Pre-assigned Journal Numbers

This is to announce that RFC numbers can now be obtained on-line through
NLS at OFFICE-1; they can no longer be obtained on-line at SRI-ARC.
You may still call the NIC to get an RFC number, if you do not wish to
use the on-line facilities.

Also, please note that pre-assigned journal numbers (excepting RFC
numbers) can be used through NLS only on the system (OFFICE-1 or SRI-
ARC) from which they were taken.

PROBLEMThe location for obtaining RFC numbers online had changed.
MECHANISMThe memo directs users to NLS at OFFICE-1 for online requests and says they may still call the NIC instead.
WHERE TO REQUEST A NUMBERPre-assigned Journal numbers other than RFC numbers can be used through NLS only on the system from which they were obtained.

§1Requesting an RFC Number

RFC numbers can now be obtained online through NLS at OFFICE-1. They can no longer be obtained online at SRI-ARC.

Users who do not want to use the online facilities may still call the NIC to obtain an RFC number.

Use NLS at OFFICE-1 to request an RFC number online. Calling the NIC remains another option.

§2Using Pre-Assigned Journal Numbers

The memo distinguishes RFC numbers from other pre-assigned Journal numbers. For numbers other than RFC numbers, NLS can use a pre-assigned number only on the system where that number was obtained.

The notice does not change this restriction for the RFC-number request process described above.

A pre-assigned Journal number other than an RFC number works only in NLS on the system where it was taken.

§3Two Ways to Obtain a Number

For an RFC number, the notice gives two routes: request it online through NLS at OFFICE-1 or call the NIC. The online location at SRI-ARC is no longer available for this purpose.

The memo's second point applies to pre-assigned Journal numbers other than RFC numbers: they remain usable through NLS only on the system where they were taken.

Request an RFC number through OFFICE-1 or by calling the NIC. Use another pre-assigned Journal number only on the system where it came from.
