All host interfaces are local (except host number 005 which is an
easily convertible local/distant interface and we have been asked by
Div 6 to avoid using it so Div 6 can more easily check out PDP-10 IMP
interfaces). The PDP-11 with the line printer is intentionally on
host 105 so that a simple minded program can respond when someone
tries to ICP to its logger socket "To login to BBN (System C) use
   host number 241(10)".

PROBLEMBBN needed an approved configuration showing how its computers and devices would connect to the network.
MECHANISMThe RFC diagrams hosts attached to IMP-50 and IMP-5 and gives host numbers in decimal and octal notation.
THE CONFIGURATIONThe configuration was scheduled to take effect December 18, 1974; the note also explains why host 105 was assigned to the line-printer PDP-11.

§1The BBN Host-Port Diagram

The RFC presents an approved scheme for connecting BBN computers to the network, effective December 18, 1974. Its diagram shows PDP-10 and PDP-11 systems and special-purpose devices connected through IMP-50 and IMP-5, as well as connections to other listed network equipment.

Host identifiers in the diagram are shown in decimal and octal notation.

The diagram shows BBN's computers and devices and the IMPs they connect through. Each host has a number written in decimal and octal.

§2Host Interface Notes

The RFC says all host interfaces are local, except host number 005, which could be converted between local and distant operation. BBN had been asked not to use 005 so Division 6 could more easily check PDP-10 IMP interfaces.

The PDP-11 with the line printer was intentionally assigned host 105. A simple program on it could answer a connection to its logger socket with the host number to use to log in to BBN System C.

Most interfaces were local. Host 005 was left available for interface testing, while the line-printer PDP-11 was given a number that could direct users to System C.

§3Effective Date

The approved configuration was scheduled to become effective December 18, 1974. The RFC documents the arrangement and the reason for the host 105 assignment.

The note states when the approved configuration would take effect. It also explains the intended use of host 105.
