BBN IMP (#5) AND NCC SCHEDULE MARCH 4, 1971

On Saturday morning, March 4, 1972, at 0800 EST the BBN IMP (#5)
will go off the air to allow for a move of the equipment to a
new location in BBN's facilities. The NCC telephone and operators
will be available as usual during this period. We hope to have
the IMP back on the Network by early Saturday afternoon; the
choice of Saturday morning was made intentionally so that if by
some stroke of fate all our wideband lines stay down longer than
anticipated, the impact on others in the network will be minimized.
We anticipate that all other sites will operate normally through
   this period.

Shortly subsequent to this move, a new Host will be connected to
the net. This is a PDP-1D at BBN which will be used for certain
additional NCC functions. It will not be a Server site. We
prefer the Host name "BBN-1D"; its network address will be 197.

PROBLEMBBN needed to move its IMP 5 to another location in its facilities.
MECHANISMThe notice schedules the interruption for Saturday morning and says the Network Control Center telephone and operators will remain available.
WHAT THE NOTICE SAYSA BBN PDP-1D was also expected to join the network soon afterward for additional Network Control Center functions.

§1Moving IMP 5

BBN planned to take IMP 5 off the network at 0800 EST on Saturday, March 4, 1972, so the equipment could be moved to a new location within its facilities. The notice says the Network Control Center telephone and operators would be available as usual during the move.

BBN hoped to reconnect the IMP by early Saturday afternoon, while noting that delays to the wideband lines could extend the outage.

BBN planned to disconnect IMP 5 while moving it. The Network Control Center would still answer calls during the work.

§2Why the Work Was Scheduled Then

The move was planned for Saturday morning to reduce its impact on other network sites if the work or line recovery took longer than expected. The notice expected other sites to operate normally during the period, while IMP 5 was out of service.

BBN chose a Saturday morning so a longer-than-planned outage would affect fewer network activities.

§3A New BBN Host

Shortly after the move, BBN planned to connect a PDP-1D host for additional Network Control Center functions. BBN preferred the host name BBN-1D and assigned it network address 197. The notice says it would not be a server site.

BBN also planned to connect a PDP-1D called BBN-1D for control-center work. The notice says this computer would not provide server services.
