IMP/TIP Memory Retrofit Schedule (Revision 2)

This revision contains two types of changes to RFC #447. First, the
retrofits to Utah, Belvoir, NOAA, USC, Stanford, ISI, Case, and CCA have
been completed and are therefore removed from the schedule. Second, the
retrofits to UCSB, ETAC, Aberdeen, and Rome have been rescheduled.

The revised text of RFC #447 follows:

During the first several months of 1973 we will be retrofitting each IMP
and TIP with additional core memory. At the end of the retrofit
program, the memory sizes of the various machines will be as follows:

    IMP (516 or 316) - 16K words

    TIP - 28K words

TIP with Magnetic Tape Option - 32K words

In addition, the expansion of the TIP core memory will necessitate
enlarging the TIP to two cabinets.

Listed below is the schedule for the remaining retrofits. We have
arranged this schedule to coincide with the usual monthly Preventive
Maintenance at each site so as to minimize user inconvenience, but the
work required will frequently require the machines to be down longer
than normal. I will issue additional RFC's updating this schedule as
necessary.

Any site which anticipates difficulty with the expansion of TIP size,
and thus the floor space requirement, should contact Hawley Rising (BBN)

PROBLEMBBN needed to coordinate memory retrofits at IMP and TIP sites while limiting disruption to users.
MECHANISMThe revision removes sites whose retrofits were complete, reschedules others, and lists remaining retrofit dates and resulting memory sizes.
STATUS THENRFC 476 obsoletes RFC 447 and is a dated operational schedule for 1973.

§1What Revision 2 Changes

RFC 476 revises the schedule in RFC 447. It removes Utah, Belvoir, NOAA, USC, Stanford, ISI, Case and CCA because their retrofits were completed, and reschedules UCSB, ETAC, Aberdeen and Rome.

The RFC reproduces the revised text of RFC 447 for the remaining work.

Completed sites are removed from the schedule. Several other sites receive new dates.

§2Memory After the Retrofit

The plan is to add core memory to IMPs and TIPs during the first several months of 1973. At completion, an IMP (516 or 316) is listed at 16K words, a TIP at 28K words, and a TIP with Magnetic Tape Option at 32K words.

The expansion of TIP core memory requires two cabinets. The RFC asks sites anticipating floor-space difficulties to contact BBN.

The planned memory sizes are 16K words for an IMP, 28K for a TIP and 32K for a TIP with Magnetic Tape Option. The expanded TIP occupies two cabinets.

§3Scheduling the Work

The schedule is arranged to coincide with usual monthly Preventive Maintenance at each site, to minimize user inconvenience. The work may keep machines down longer than normal. Dates are given as month and day.

Aberdeen is listed as postponed indefinitely, and the author says further RFCs will update the schedule if necessary.

The work is planned alongside regular maintenance, but machines may be unavailable for longer than usual. Aberdeen has no new date in this revision.
