PROBLEMNetwork users needed a current way to see whether ARPANET hosts could accept connections.
MECHANISMSURVEY tried to connect to each listed host's LOGGER socket and recorded a status and response time. A status service and the NETWORK program let users retrieve current and older results.
WHAT IT REPORTSRFC 530 updates RFC 308 and RFC 523. It reports the service's operation and describes planned improvements to recording and accessing survey data.

§1How the Survey Checked Hosts

The SURVEY program tested the known server hosts listed in its table by attempting an Initial Connection Protocol (ICP) connection to each host's LOGGER socket, socket 1. The report says the program ran surveys every 20 minutes, after previously using 15-minute intervals.

Earlier runs could stop partway through a connection. The revised program tried to complete ICP and used a 5-second timeout for each connection after receiving the server socket number. This change addressed hosts that did not provide timeouts or queue ICP commands, which could leave host connection resources occupied.

The program tried to connect to each listed computer's LOGGER service. It recorded whether the connection worked and used a timeout so an unfinished attempt would not keep using host resources.

§2Survey Results and Status Codes

For each host, the program recorded a date, time, status and response time. The response-time measure covered establishing a full-duplex TELNET connection. It did not include waiting for a prompt or logging in, so it was a lower bound on the response time a user would experience. It was meaningful only when the LOGGER was available.

The report defines status codes from 0 to 5: 5 means the LOGGER is available; 4 means the connection timed out; 3 means the host aborted it; 2 means there was no reset response; 1 means the host was reported dead or disconnected; and 0 means it was not surveyed or its status was undetermined. The network status service on host 70, socket 15, sent the latest survey as a date and time followed by each host's number, status and response time.

Each result tells when the survey ran and whether a host answered, along with the connection time. The status code explains why a host did not answer, or says that it was not checked.

§3Retrieving Results and Future Plans

People could retrieve survey data from host 70 using its status service on socket 15. The report also describes the NETWORK program, which users reached by logging in to host 70 on socket 1. Its commands displayed the latest survey, summaries across multiple surveys, a host's history and acceptable host names. Other hosts could collect the status data and display it without running their own survey.

The report says survey data was already stored in a DATACOMPUTER database and could be accessed through programs in the MUDDLE subsystem. The authors planned to record each individual test in a standard ASCII format and transfer data regularly to the database. They also invited suggestions for additional displays and measurements.

People could look up the latest results or review a host's history through network services. The report also describes plans to store each test in a format that programs could use more easily.
